USBG Resume Building Seminar - Presented by USBG Foundation & Casa Noble Tequila


Seminar to be led by Brian Warrener, Associate Professor, and Sheri Young, Dean of Experiential Education & Career Services, of Johnson & Wales University

HENDERSON, NV (AUGUST 11, 2020) - The United States Bartenders’ Guild announces today that it will host a 90-minute resume building seminar, presented by the USBG National Charity Foundation and Casa Noble Tequila, for hospitality professionals on Tuesday, August 25, at 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern. The seminar will be livestreamed on the USBG’s Facebook page and will include Q&A.

The seminar, led by Brian Warrener and Sheri Young, of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, aims to provide tips on how to leverage skills to write a resume that will get noticed whether the goal is to change venues, move to the next level, or explore new opportunities. This presentation will also cover job interview preparations as well as several online resources available to hospitality professionals.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has forced almost all of the nearly 700,000 full-time bartenders in the United States into unemployment. For many who have been able to return to work, hours have been cut to unsustainable levels as business owners attempt to remain economically viable in service to a fraction of the pre-pandemic customer base. Other owners have been driven to insolvency, pushing staff to seek employment elsewhere - either another bar or another industry entirely.

The seminar is the latest effort by the USBG Foundation to help bar staff who have struggled in the face of the pandemic. In March, the Foundation formed the COVID-19 Relief Campaign as an extension of its Bartender Emergency Assistance Program (BEAP). To date, the campaign has raised over $9 million, which has been converted to more than 30,000 bartenders, bar backs, and cocktail servers with modest grants between $150-$500. The grants were intended as a supplement to federal relief programs that are designed to help with larger, sustained expenses.

Said USBG Executive Director Aaron Gregory Smith, “The bar industry has been among the hardest-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Essentially, our industry evaporated almost overnight, and with it employment for hundreds of thousands of workers. The USBG exists to provide resources to help people in our industry advance their careers. We’re honored to be in a position to present experts like Brian and Sheri to help industry professionals navigate their next steps.”

About the Speakers:

Brian Warrener is currently an Associate Professor at Johnson & Wales University. He began his career in the hospitality industry in 1985 and has had more than 15 years’ experience as a property general manager overseeing operations at private city and country clubs. His areas of scholarly interest include food and beverage operations and service management theory and practice. He holds certifications in wine and spirits from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET).

During her 25 years with JWU, Sheri Young has had several careers. She joined the International Admissions team at Johnson & Wales immediately after graduating from JWU and spent the next eight years traveling the world recruiting international students. Her move back to the USA in 2003 launched the next step in her career with Alumni Relations for JWU. Within a couple of years, Young was asked to take a lead position in re-engineering the Career Development Office, which is now known as Experiential Education & Career Services. In her current role as Dean of Experiential Education & Career Services (EE&CS), Young oversees outcomes and assessment for the university’s internship and other experientially-related programs, as well as sets the direction and policies for the EE&CS teams at all campuses.

She aso leads a team of career advisors and experiential education coordinators who guide 1,800 students on internship each year, teach 45 career courses, and host over 500 employers who conduct 1,300 interviews on campus each year. Young also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the JWU College on Online Education, teaching graduate-level Research courses and undergraduate courses in Organizational Behavior.
